Description

This seminar is designed to equip physicians and health care providers with recommendations in prescribing physical therapy as a treatment alternative to opioids for back pain and supportive treatment for opioid addiction. Participants will actively participate in  how to hold P Ts accountable for evidence-based treatment, clinical examination skills and exercise therapy (ET) that identifies patient impairments. The class includes motivational techniques, an ET textbook and will be instructed by Colin Hoobler, PT, DPT, MS and colleagues.

 

The seminar Due to limited pace, separate registration is required for the OMT seminar. Please note that the early registration discount does not apply to this seminar and there are no scholarships available for residents or students.

 

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

 

Participants will:

 

1.      Understand the 4 components of an exercise therapy (ET) program and the importance of holding physical therapists accountable for including them in a plan of care for patients with chronic mechanical low back pain (CMLBP).

2.      Apply physical examination findings to an effective ET care plan for patients with CMLBP and use this information to motivate patients to participate in a customized ET program in place of opioids.

 

About Colin Hoobler, PT, DPT, MS

 

Dr. Hoobler has been a physical therapist for 15 years. He completed his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Boston University with an emphasis in Exercise Science; his first Master’s Degree in Bioemechanics, Sports Medicine and Motor Control from the University of Oregon, and second Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from Hahnemann University. His Bachelor’s Degree was completed in Exercise Science from Oregon State University. He has authored two books, the Advanced Training Specialist (A.T.S.) Textbook for Health Professionals and “Lose the Wait: Efficient Exercise for Busy Professionals”. He has lectured on the medicinal use of exercise therapy (ET) at the OHSU’s Medical School, Oregon Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Doctoral Programs in Physical Therapy at George Fox University and Pacific University. Dr. Hoobler created, developed and hosted “The Fitness Show” on PBS, a national program dedicated to educating the public on the use of ET in treating and preventing disease. He was also KGW News’ resident health expert for four years and currently writes for the Oregonian, educating viewers on a wide variety of health problems. He invented a new balance training device for older adults, S3 Balance®, allowing senior care facilities and hospitals to apply balance training research to patients while reducing staff strain. He competed as a 100% natural bodybuilder for 8 years, counting Collegiate Mr. Oregon, Ironman Champion and fourth in the USA Championships amongst his achievements.
